DSC_0887-(ZF-8413-57929-1-003)[So cute and sweet, but LIES!!! All LIES]

You know when you see all of those adorable baby rooms on Pinterest and think, oh my gosh, so sweet. That just looks too good to be true! That's because it is!!! Beware! You are being lied to!!! Gasp! And you thought the internet was a beacon of truth. These sweet Pinterest nurseries only look like that until the child can move, then all bets are off. I have to admit I wasn't thinking about a moving, grabby, no napping monster baby when I decorated our nursery… I should've, ohhhh I should've… It was so sweet and cute for the first 3 months when I only went in his room to rock in the rocking chair. Needless to say we had some serious function issues and I have decided to share my knowledge with you now. You're welcome friends.

IMG_22671. Forget the wool rugs. We love our gorgeous West Elm shag wool rug, it's beautiful and it was a killer good deal, but not only is it a shedding nightmare, it gets vomited and drooled on like ALL. THE. TIME. We are already planning purchasing a nice super soft cotton rug. This one tops the list.

IMG_22652. Hang everything out of reach of grabby, grubby hands… and feet. I love our art work and I still think it was the perfect aesthetic choice, but maybe not hanging it so close to his changing pad. Like dude, I have been waiting to be hit in the head by one of these things and finally took them down the other day.

IMG_22663. Cover 'dem windows. Our "blackout" curtains were a flipping joke and when our little guy refused to nap in anything other than a pitch black room we improvised. I was told by a friend to bust out dark plastic wrap a la "Dexter Style." We went more ghetto fab and threw every damn thing we could find over the curtain rod. BOOM. Black out shades only a college student could love.

4. Keep wattages wayyyy down. Our lamps are brighter than the surface of the sun and instead of buying the proper low wattage bulb, again, we just throw a whole bunch of shit on top of the light. Are you seeing a trend?!

5. Cords, cords, cords. Damn, my kid loves to eat cords!? What the heck!? You think oh my kid won't try to kill himself by getting tangled in cords or sticking his fingers in light sockets until he's a crazy toddler… Oh no, think like 4 months… They aren't very bright, think about how to hide cords and keep them out of reach when you first design the room to keep you from having to reconfigure the space!DSC_0891-(ZF-8413-57929-1-007)

So much for my beautiful nursery… But Honey Badger don't give a fu--- You get it.

I would like to tell you that I have kept up my minimalist baby purchasing… but alas, I have entered full on TONS OF BABY CRAP territory. Such is my life and I'm okay with that. Rocco [and from what I can tell from my Mommy friends, most babies are the same] likes change. He likes his toys to rotate. He wants to play with anything and everything. So not only have I collected a plethora of new toys, my living room is covered with Tubberware, Amazon boxes, Patrón boxes, dvd boxes… all boxes!! Over the course of my nearly 11 months as a mother a few things have stood out as absolutely imperative, some I didn't even think were necessary. Learn from my mistakes!! Here is a list of my must have baby stuff from 5-6ish months onward.

the safe sippy[1] I have purchased so many sippy cups and they have all been pretty unsuccessful. The Safe Sippy is the first cup that Mohawk has [a] held by himself and [b] actually drank from. It's amazing. It comes with 2 different sucking options, we love the straw! Don't waste your money, I swear this is the only cup you need!

[2] These bibs are literally the greatest thing ever. You can loose up to a 1/4 cup of food, easy, when your nugget is learning to eat, this saves food and definitely helps you keep a somewhat cleaner floor… Unless your dogs eat up everything the kiddo drops… but still it saves food, so there's that.

[3] This sound machine is still our favorite thing! Nap time and bed time wouldn't be complete without the soothing sound of rainfall! This is a MUST HAVE.

happy baby teethers, tomee tippy bibs[4] We love these "crackers" they have very clean and minimal ingredients and are great for learning how to finger feed and keeping a grumpy baby happy in the car!

[5] The Captain read about Tobbles on a "smart kids toys" website and a lovely friend owns them and Mohawk seemed to like them. They are a complete win!! Every kid we've seen with them has been a fan. It helps them learn balance and stacking. Plus, they look like a piece of abstract art.

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset[6] These stacking cups for the win!!! He LOVES them and mixed with his Tobbles neo he is a stacking pro!

[7] I was one of those people that couldn't even see the need for a rocking chair. I'm not "rocker" kind of person. BS. A good, comfy rocking chair is absolutely a must! I love, love our chair. It's modern, but so comfy! The awesome pretty plastic white Eames rocker, while beautiful, would be such a disappointing purchase. That's not the chair you want to nurse in at 4am when your nugget is going through a growth spurt.

FullSizeRender copy[8] The squirrel suit!!! This thing has saved our life since Rocco has started rolling. We were/still are obsessed with his Ollie Swaddle, but once he started flipping and needing his hands to flip over we had to figure something out. Wellll insert Shark Tank. My sis-in-law informed of the Zipadee-Zip people and praise The Lord. The suit limits their fast twitch movements while allowing them the freedom to roll and move around. It's also a safe zip up blanket. This thing is amazing.

[9] We tried this at a friends house when he was around 6 months and it's magic. He loves it. This thing provided me many moments to do dishes, make dinner, write this blog… This thing wasn't cheap, but for 3 good months it was the greatest thing ever… He still leans on it and plays with it even now.

[10] Ohhhh baby gates. How I love thee!? Despite nearly breaking my toe on one, they are amazing to keep the nugget out of danger and the dog's water bowl… These are super sturdy and can withstand babies weight as they desperately try to kill themselves… Kids are dumb.

[11] We have a few favorite books, Red Truck and Dada, but The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a must have for any baby! Mohawk adores this book!!! And I think most kids do, hence why it's still on every babies book shelf.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset[12] This one has a hefty price tag, but it's by far my favorite baby purchase thus far. The Tripp Trapp highchair is ergonomically designed by those clever Swedes. It can go from 6 months to 300 pounds! That's right, you can use it as a chair for adults! The design is so simple, it's easy to clean and Mohawk LOVES it. I am huge fan of this product, despite making fun of it BB [before baby] It's magic and it's good design. Win-win.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset[13] I am an Honest Co fan. We really use all of their products. I could go on and on, but that's worthy of a separate post. I have literally re-purschased everything I've ever bought from them, except the dishwasher pellets - I didn't care for those… We have the diaper and essentials bundle and while you might say it's pricy, it saves me so much money from, my now, unnecessary trips to Target, gosh things escalate so quickly in that place. Try not to judge my poor self control. Between Honest and Amazon Prime, I NEVER have to go out for wipes or a new sippy cup.

[14] This music machine is a big hit with the munchkin. We've been loving this for months! Mohawk would stare at it when he was only a few months old and, now, he loves to press the buttons and dance to the music! And it's not even annoying that annoying.

So that's the short list of things that we love and use just about every day!! Raising kids is hard, deciding what to buy them shouldn't be!!! What's your favorite baby toy? gadget? piece of furniture!? Share with us!!!!

Baby Shenanigans I Can't Live Without: 0-3 Months

Dude, kids need a ton of shit. Like you can't get out of the door without the infant carrier, a swaddle blanket, a blanket-blanket, diapers, wipes, a nursing cover, a paci, a change of clothes, and blah blah blah blah… Holy BANANAS!!! Now, I bought a crap-ton of baby clothes, but I really wanted to err on the side of caution and have less rather than more when it came to baby toys and accessories. I think that was one thing I did right, but you still need quite a bit of stuff at the ready to keep you sane whilst you care for your lil' nugget. Here are 10 9 things that have made my life better over the past 3 months.

[1] 4Moms Mamaroo aka Sleep Central. I am in love with this swing. He slept in it almost exclusively his first 3 weeks and where he took the majority of his naps until he hit 3 months. He will also just chill and watch me cook and suck on his hands during his awake time, he hangs out and plays with Daisy the Cow and stares for ages at the built in mobile. It's adorable. We like the Kangaroo setting on the highest level when he's awake and the car ride setting when he's asleep!

DSC_0645-(ZF-7009-48660-1-009)DSC_0648-(ZF-7009-48660-1-008)DSC_0658-(ZF-7009-48660-1-004)[2] The Ollie Swaddle Okay, now this thing is EPIC!!!! Like I'm in love! My bestie has 5 lil' nuggets [yes, 5!!!] and is the most wonderful swaddler I've ever met. She can wrap up an Aden & Anais muslin swaddle like a champ. I can't seem to master it, he was always busting out. So I tried various velcro swaddles and, again, he could Houdini his hands out of them. He was completely sabotaging his sleep. I decided to try The Ollie Swaddle and let me tell you, ah-mazing! He sleeps great with it on and he doesn't ever overheat!! Bomb dot com. Worth the money, for sure, because it's the only swaddle I need. I love, love, love, love this thing… Have I made my point!? I thought so.

DSC_0796-(ZF-1563-22915-1-001)[3] Baby Gap Zippered Footie PJs My mom, Sandy, told me over and over, "zippered footie pjs are what you want." Like most things, Sandy was right!!! They are amazing and easy and keep the nuggets feet nice and warm. I am obsessed with the adorable patterns at Baby Gap. I stock up when they do their 50% off. Do it.

DSC_0791-(ZF-1563-22915-1-002)[4] Sound Machine  The rain setting pretty much completes my life. Honestly, I know every site says they help the baby sleep because they are used to the loud sloshing sounds from the womb, but dude, I think this is more for the parents. It helps so much to drown out every tiny little baby sound that threaten the few precious hours of sleep that you actually get. I'm never gonna be able to sleep without one.

[5] Bassinet I wasn't going to use an actual bassinet. I planned on having Roc sleep in his pack n play bassinet… yeah, that didn't work. He ended up spending the first 3 weeks sleeping in his Mamaroo and in the bed with me. The pack n play, like his crib, just seemed to big. The second we would wake up and realize that he was in it he would howl, so when a friend offered up her bassinet I thought it was worth a try. Worked like a charm. He loves the thing!! He would even wake up  just look around staying completely calm and put himself back to sleep. #Winning. It's great for late night feedings too, I essentially used it as a co-sleeper. We just transitioned Rocco to his crib, so it's true you don't need for more than 3 or so months, but I will definitely buy one if we have another kid.

[6] 100% Pure baby products A friend gifted us the awesome baby wash and shampoo as a shower gift. The nugget is just now starting to enjoy bath time and these products are legit. They get him nice and clean and I don't have to worry about them being toxic or nasty.

DSC_0679-(ZF-1563-22915-1-004)DSC_0792-(ZF-1563-22915-1-005)[7] Soothie I wasn't sure what I thought about pacifiers with the whole nipple confusion thing, but alas, I learned to LOVE this thing. We tried a few and a friend even brought me some extras for us to try because he seemed to really dislike them, but the green soothie ended up being the best. I realized it's a persistence and timing thing, like all things baby sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Such is life.

[8] Fitness Ball So I bought this thing for labor, but we forgot it… Oops. And it wouldn't have mattered I was definitely a labor on my back mama. I was working hard enough, I didn't need to worry about balancing or holding myself up. But who knew that the little guy would love bouncing on the ball so much!! I mean, it hurts my back like whoa, but when you are willing to do anything to get your bambino calm, you bounce.

[9] Boba Wrap This wrap looked super daunting to me, but our very own Kelsey Erin of Kelsey Erin Photography spent an afternoon teaching me how to dougie wrap this insanely long fabric into a safe hold. And let me tell you, with a deployed hubs and no help, for many many nights this was the only way I got anything done, sometimes it was the only way I could eat a meal. He would almost instantly quiet if he was fussy and within 5 minutes he would be asleep. It was life magic. Baby soothing magic.

I am sure that there are 10 things I loved, but right now my sleep deprived brain has only 9. So that's all you're getting! Also, if you have a new-newborn then let me just say I know it's wonderful and beautiful and you love them so much, but it's okay to feel tired and just want to cry in the fetal position in the bathroom. Apparently that's normal. That's when I say, why don't more Mama's talk about it then!?!? I'm probably going to write more on the subject later, but let me just say you are in survival mode and doing what is best for you and your baby don't let ANYONE tell you that you are doing something the "wrong way." Every baby is different. You do you boo boo.

Happy Wednesday!!!
