Blissful's Back, Alright.

Oh my god, she's back again. Excuse my 90's reference. As a nearly 33 year old, I am wholeheartedly embracing my old-ness. Plus, that song still kicks ass 20 years later. I started blogging 10 years ago because it was fun. Then stopped because it was un-fun. Then started again. Then stopped, ah-gain. I've now done this a handful of times, wrestled with if it mattered and who cared... Then came to the conclusion, that I missed the creative outlet and will continue to blog when it's fun. Moreover I've decided to embrace the roots of my blog and talk clothes. Fashion. My original true love.

The idea of what dressing up means has changed for me. Having kids has something to do with that, but my time in SoCal has schooled me the art of casual dress. This look is fun, right!? What I love about my Storq dress is that while I look put together and dare I say "dressed up" the truth is, I'm in a stylish nightgown or at least that's what it feels like and I can throw it in the wash. That my friends is the goal. Comfort. Ease. Also, if you've been debating a shaggy coat, I say go for it. You will not be sorry.

Well, the Captain's done it again. We are so excited to be growing our little family, and yes, it was on purpose! Arriving August 2016. Stay tuned to watch me get chunky!

Rock Star Mommy

DSC_0728-(ZF-6193-92140-1-006)DSC_0730-(ZF-6193-92140-1-007)Just because you have a baby doesn't mean you can't still be a bad ass. I would like to think that I'm a cool mom and not a regular mom, so a fun pair of ripped up black denim and a solid leather jacket is the perfect remedy for the post baby body blues-- Say that 3 times fast!! I think attitude can be just as important as your actual clothes when you are trying to feel good in your skin… This can be crazy difficult after having a kid. I mean, when boyfriend jeans that used to be super loose barely squeak up your thighs it's hard not to break down!! And all of the "give yourself time" "you just had a baby" "it took 9 months to make a baby" nonsense does nothing to make you feel better. You just wanna cry. Eat a cookie. Then cry some more. I've found the trick for post baby jeans is [drumroll please] stretch. Those puppies need to have a crap-load of lycra!!! Now I'm not the type to buy jeans with stretch, I like good ol' denim so this was new for me, but I swear it's the best thing ever!! I know some of your are thinking, I don't want to waste money on transitional clothes, I hear ya, but you're wrong. Having a pair or 2 of jeans that make you feel awesome is absolutely worth the cost. Also, with stretch denim you will probably be closer to your normal size than you would think… but I'll warn you things can get a bit muffin toppy and this is where your slimming tanks and baggy tees come into play!!

[Note to those women who rock their maternity jeans much, much longer than you should…] Yes, some maternity denim will continue to fit after bambino especially for the fist few weeks, but once you are sans big baby tummy your pants will fall down, your hips will start to go back to their rightful place and you will probably have mom-jean butt… Buy yourself a pair. Do it.

My favorite denim with some give. I'm partial to skinny jeans, I think when worn correctly they work on all body types and are super duper flattering.

The Long and Short of it

First off, I had pink hair!!!! It's been 15 years in the making, but I finally put some pink in my locks! Such a rebel. Yes, you can barely tell in these photos and that was sorta the point and it's pretty much completely gone now. Next time I will go brighter, but I wanted a kiss of pastel pink to make me feel like the cool mom I am… cause I am soooo not a regular mom…

So here's my final maternity fashion post! I can't believe I'm no longer pregnant… It's amazing how that happens… I have never been much for maxi skirts on me before pregnancy. Honestly, even as a self proclaimed stylist I find them very difficult to dress. I love layers and the whole rocker thing, so I find it hard to layer on a maxi without looking like a full on hobo. Well with as hot as it's been, pants and shorts are just a hell no and if you don't want to purchase maternity clothes you are left with maxi skirts and maxi dresses. This skirt was lovingly passed down from my sister, I stretch it out pretty badly every time I wear it, but luckily it always shrinks back. If you've never visited my sister's store's site you totally should, you can find it here. Super cute, super affordable. I have also had a ton of luck with Nordstrom Racks maxi skirt selection and for the price you can't beat it. I don't plan on wearing these much post baby, so I really didn't want to spend a fortune. I've tried to keep my maxi's fun and patterned and pair them with a ton of boho accessories. I threw on whatever rings still fit my sausage fingers and as many dainty gold necklaces as my sweaty body can handle [little did I know that wasn't going to go away after Rocco's birth]. My makeup these days, as you can see, is barely there. If I can cover redness and the bags under my eyes than I am totes winning at life! Who's ready for Fall/Winter!? #ThisGirl

Yes, the post title is meant to be sung to the tune of I'm so Fancy… So I've seen a few bloggers do BumpDates every month which are super cute and so much fun to read. My favorite has been my hilarious friend Kristen. Her little boy Everett is just precious!!! Well, I thought that I should finish this pregnancy off with a little BumpDate round up of myself. I mean, I love talking about myself sooooo it's surprising I haven't been doing it all along!

I want to thank Tatum Kathleen Photography for my awesome maternity shots!! Also, a huge thanks  to Kelsey Erin Photography for keeping Blissful Happenings looking good and taking our brilliant food comparison pics!!! I love my boos!!

[How many weeks?] 39 weeks on Thursday

[Gender?] Boy

[Name?] Rocco

[Weight Gain?] I hate you! How rude!?

[What foods have you been craving?] All. The. Food. I have had an enormous appetite pretty much since the second trimester. Who are we kidding!? I have always had an enormous appetite, but it's been out of control. I started off craving biscuits and gravy and frozen Van's waffles. I crave avocado rolls and veggie tempura from Lil' Tokyo pretty much every single day. They know me pretty well there…

[How has your sleep been?] Meh. It's been okay. I would say I get up to pee 3-6 times a night which isn't awesome, but luckily I'm able to fall back asleep. Nature's way of preparing me for Rocco's many feedings!?

[How are your emotions?] Ummmm they are definitely heightened. I cry a lot, it doesn't take much at all.  I am incredibly needy these days and I miss The Captain. I spend a lot of time hugging my dogs and watching Gossip Girl.

[Have you been nesting?] Definitely. I just want everything cleaned and disinfected… This has been a terribly inconvenient time for my house to spring a leak and have a massive hole cut into my ceiling. Sigh. I can't wait for it to be finished so I can mop and dust.

[What's on my nightstand?] I've been reading HypnoBirthing, HappyBaby, Dad is Fat, and Bringing Up Bébé. I can't quite focus enough to read much, but I've been trying.

[What am I super over!?] This heat. I can't take it. It's been absolutely miserable. This ridiculously un-San Diegan 95-100 degree weather is killing me. Crotch sweat is an awful thing…

[Any guesses when you will go into labor?] I wish I could say tomorrow, but I have a feeling I'm going to be pretty close to my due date. I think October 4 is the day… but what do I know!?!

[What I'm looking forward to?] I absolutely cannot wait to meet this nugget!! I am so excited for labor, which I know sounds crazy, but I can't wait to feel a contraction and know that sometime soon I'm gonna meet my son!! I can't wait to see if he's going to look like The Captain!! I just imagine his mini-me and that makes me happier than I can tell you!!!

Clothes I Can't Live Without These Days…

Preggo Pieces 2.001[1] [2] [3] [4]

So these days it's not particularly easy to dress myself in super cute clothes all the time, but I do what I can. I'm 8 and a half months pregnant in the dead of summer in Southern California and all I can say is that I would really like to just walk around naked all the time with a cooling towel and a fan. I honestly would prefer to never leave my house, but alas that is not a realistic dream.

When it comes to preggo fashion the 4 pieces above are about the only things I've bought "maternity" and I love them all! The jeans were a great purchase until about 6 months when the average temp began to hoover in the high 80's, but for the fall/winter you absolutely must buy a few pairs! JBrand are so pricey, but I tell you they are amazing and they don't look a bit like maternity! Love that. Now shorts, I've tried a few pairs and the ones I liked the most are shockingly Jessica Simpson. I know, right!? They are super comfy and look really stylish! Fab. I've bought a few colors of this dress and it's great for layering with a kimono, I feel cute and they were super cheap. Winning. I also bought a similar baseball tee and I love it! I probably didn't need to buy maternity, but I love that the hem curves and that it's a bit longer. So those are my 4 maternity pieces.

Preggo Pieces.001[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

I honestly think it's completely possible to not buy a single maternity piece when you are pregnant in the summer. So really what I've been sticking to are maxi dresses, leggings, and tshirts. Boom. I have found that you usually can wear your same size or just one size up in more body conscious pieces. The key to wearing non-maternity clothes is material, gotta have some stretch! I've bought a ton of maxis and really found that they are easiest thing to throw on when you are just hot and tired and feel like someone punched you in the vag. Gap, Old Navy, and Nordstrom Rack have been my go to shops for dresses. I refuse to spend a ton of money on anything I can't be sure will fit after Rocco joins the world. Even with the heat I have been wearing leggings and my go to are the high-low pant for Lululemon which are just so crazy, comfy and make you feel super skinny! I also have a pair of liquid leggings similar to the pair above that I absolutely love for a night out! I think they look so cool with a bump. I am obsessed with v-neck tees from JCrew, I went up a size and they have lasted through out my whole pregnancy! Finally, I invested in a crazy comfy pair of leopard sneakers. Chic mom shoes, if you will... I will, thank you very much!

What are your go-to preggo pieces!?!? Do you buy a ton of maternity items or prefer to stick to adaptable regular clothes!?

Hello 33 weeks!!! Say whaaaaaa!?!?! Can you believe it? 'lieve it!?!?!? I can't! Rocco is on his way to the world people! The Captain and I are just getting so stinking excited because it's definitely getting really real. All that second trimester energy is officially peace'd out and now I just want to take naps and eat waffles and avocado rolls. I am forcing myself to go on walks and do my Tracy dvds as often as my poor lil' hips can take it!! I have to admit much to my dismay I HATE wearing clothes these days. I love clothes!!!! But alas, I don't want to wear anything and the idea of jeans or pants in this summer soCal heat is just cray. I am living in maxi dresses and skirts. I found this one at a spectacular little boutique, Metaphor, in downtown Vista which is between San Marcos and Oceanside San Diego peeps. I have managed to only purchase 5 items that are actually maternity throughout this pregnancy and I think I've managed to look pretty cute!!! So, I'll be talking about my favorite preggo clothes next week!! Stay tuned!

Horizontal Stripes are Slimming, no?

DSC_0002-(ZF-7445-37833-1-041) DSC_1275-(ZF-7445-37833-1-037) DSC_1280-(ZF-7445-37833-1-038) DSC_1290-(ZF-7445-37833-1-040) DSC_1286-(ZF-7445-37833-1-039)Images via Kelsey Erin Photography

Since it would be impossible for me to feel more wide, I've decided to no longer give a flying eff. I want to wear stripes, so I wear stripes. I found this little gem at my favorite San Diego boutique Mimi and Red. Yes, I spend a great deal of money at this store. This dress is magically stretchy so it hugs baby Rocco without being vulgar! After watching the adorable Begin Again, I was super inspired by Keira Knightley's adorable character's quirky, sweet style! It was girlie and chic, but with a decidedly menswear inspired, hence my oxfords. I've also been taking an au naturel approach to my hair… I let it do whatever the bloody hell it wants to and I just don't care…. It's really freeing! I also wash it maybe once every 9 days… Yeah, I'm seriously winning at life.

Baby Shower Fab

[necklace] Sea & Cake

I was able to make a trip back to Georgia in late May to visit all my family and see all my best peeps and also to have my Filipino baby shower. I don't know if you know this, but The Captain is Filipino. I have Filipino family. It's like My Big Fat Greek Wedding except with more gambling and roasted pig. The shower was more entertaining than I can possibly describe to you! From the limitless questions to the very anatomically correct Asian baby boy figure adorning my super non-vegan cake, seriously. It was a hoot. I am truly blessed and Rocco was sufficiently showered with gifts!!! I wore this adorable Kohls dress that was passed to me by a recently preggs buddy. I am obsessed with it. I wish it was still available online so you all could buy it!!! I think this is the perfect preggo dress. It's form fitting, but not skin tight and it's long enough that, as you grow, you don't start to worry about showing your lady bits. The pattern is pretty magical and it's from Kohls!!! Kohls?!?! I linked to a few super cute tank dresses from various inexpensive stores that are great for showing off your belly and staying cool when it's hotter than the surface of the sun outside. My shoes are super comfy, stable, and ancient, but those I posted are equally fab, they might not be as stable as mine if you are preggo… these might be a better option! I know they are high, but they are super comfy. I still wear mine!! Swearsies.
